Institute of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology, UP Manila
Another unit of the University of the Philippines
System-wide Biotechnology Network is UP Manila’s Institute
of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (IBMB). Established under
the National Institutes of Health, IBMB is home to scientists
doing biotechnology research on health.
The Institute’s research efforts are specifically
focused on the prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of
infectious diseases that are of major national health concern.
Examples of these diseases are tuberculosis, pneumonia, viral
hepatitis, dengue hemorrhagic fever and malaria. The mission
of IBMB is embodied in the following objectives:
- develop vaccines, diagnostic reagents and therapeutic agents
- biological control of vectors of human diseases
- support for macro/micro nutrients
- upgrade manpower pool in medical biotechnology
- foster linkages with national and international experts
in biotechnology
Some of IBMB’s ongoing and recently finished research
projects are:
- Development of Alamar Blue-based Test as an Alternate Method
in Lymphocyte Proliferation Assays
- Development and Evaluation of a Polyclonal Antibody Based
Immunodiagnostic Assay for the Detection of V. Cholerae Species
in Stool Specimens
- A Study on the Activity of Protein Fractions of Commercially-Available
Crude Drugs in HIV-1 Chronically-Infected Cells
- Laboratory Evaluation and Preparation of the Most Effective
Formulation of Botanical Molluscicides Against Oncomelania
hopensis quadrasi von Mollendorf
- Evaluation of a Locally Developed Rapic Colorimetric Assay
as a Diagnostic Screening Test for Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase
(G-6-PD) Deficiency
- Development of an Immunoassay Procedure for the Determination
of Congenital Hypothyroidism: Development of Sandwich ELISA
Technique as a Screening Test for Congenital Hypothyroidism
- Development of Transgenic Banana and Tomatoes Expressing
the Salmonella typhi Gene Encoding Flagellar Protein Antigens
