Biotech Expertise

National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, UP Diliman

Together with the biotechnology institutes of the University of the Philippines System in UP Manila and UP Los Baños, UP Diliman’s National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (NIMBB) aims to promote biotechnology for national development. NIMBB in UP Diliman is an academic unit under the College of Science.

Aside from granting baccalaureate, masters and doctorate degrees, the Institute is evolving to expand its linkages with other academic or non-academic, private or public organizations/individuals – expanding its horizon in thrusting biotechnology for a diverse audience. Through this extension service, the Institute also coordinates seminars, workshops and exhibits.

NIMBB is equipped with the necessary facilities as well as the technical experts to engage in various biotechnology projects. The Institute has the capacity to analyze, identify, and purify genes, proteins and microbes. It is also capable of using laboratory animals as source of cells for tissue culture and as models of human diseases. Immunology research and DNA vaccine production are also part of the Institute’s activities. Facilities for delivering genes to plant, animal and bacterial cells through physical, chemical or electrical methods are likewise available.

Several laboratory processes and functions pertaining to the use of highly specialized equipments are available as extension service. The research activities of NIMBB are conducted in its five laboratories:
