Natural Science Research Institute Established as the research arm of the College of Science in University of the Philippines – Diliman, the Natural Science Research Institute (NSRI) serves as the national center of excellence for the advancement, dissemination and application of knowledge in the natural sciences. It is mandated mainly to support the researchers and academic programs of a number of the College of Science’s academic units: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Meteorology and Environmental Science. It provides funding for 45-50 projects or research works annually. The Institute maintains technical laboratories and provides extension services in the form of non-degree training courses, contract research and consultancies which academic, government, private institutions and individual entrepreneurs can avail of. The DNA Analysis Laboratory is housed in NSRI. The laboratory conducts genetic analyses of plant, animal and microbial species. It accepts human DNA typing for civil and administrative cases such as disputed parentage, immigration and identification of mass disaster victims. Part of its extension service is conducting a training course on DNA techniques and PCR-based analyses.
