Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research and Development
The Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research and Development (PCASTRD) is the sectoral council of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) mandated to develop, integrate and coordinate the national research system for advanced science and technology. As such, PCASTRD aims to be a key player in developing the national competency in advanced S&T towards a knowledge-based Philippine economy. PCASTRD’s six priority areas include biotechnology, information and communications technology, materials science, photonics technology, space technology applications, and electronics, instrumentation and control. Around these priority areas revolve the five mission programs of PCASTRD. The Research and Development (R&D) Support Program extends financial assistance for the conduct of research projects by government, academic, and private sector institutions in any of the identified priority areas. The Human Resources Development Program involves scholarship grants in MS and PhD, thesis/dissertation grants, research fellowships, visiting professorships and support to short-term trainings and seminars. Capability-building through library grants, laboratory upgrading, and support to publications (technical journals, proceedings, etc) is undertaken through the Council’s Institution Development Program. Conduct of information dissemination activities through print, electronic and mass media as well as interpersonal channels is carried out through the Information Acquisition and Dissemination Program. The Support for Technology Transfer and Commercialization Program promotes the transfer and commercialization of PCASTRD and DOST-supported R&D projects through technology promotion and support for pre-commercialization activities and intellectual property rights protection.
