Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice)

The Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) is the national lead agency for the planning, coordination, implementation and monitoring of all rice R&D activities in the Philippines. A government corporation attached to the Office of the President, PhilRice was established to develop and to promote the use of knowledge and technologies to ensure self-sufficiency in rice.

With 65% of its human resource belonging to the R&D group, PhilRice is involved in the following research-based activities:

  • developing and adapting high yielding varieties for different rice-growing areas
  • developing production management technologies and machinery to increase yield, to reduce cost and losses, and to protect the environment
  • studying rice-based farming systems to see what crops grow best with and after rice
  • discovering other profitable uses of rice and its by-products

Since its establishment in 1986, the Institute helped develop 57 rice varieties for variegated lowland, rain fed, cool elevated, upland and saline-prone soils. It also improved various production management strategies and engineered agricultural machineries. Among the rice food products that PhilRice developed are rice wine and putopao.
